  3. 3. What are employment opportunities DET/Non-Govt schools

    To be employed as a teacher in NSW public schools, you must hold a formal teaching qualification from a higher education institution recognised by the NSW Department of Education and Training. The Accelerated Teacher Training Program, targets people with related qualifications. If you are an accredited teacher with approval to teach from the NSW Department of Education and Training, Retraining could provide you with the opportunity to gain accreditation in another teaching area in the minimum period of time.

    Hearing impairment

    Special education (hearing) teachers’ work with students who are Deaf or are hearing impaired in regular classes and support classes in regular and special schools. Students with sensory disabilities may also have additional support needs.

    Following training/retraining in special education hearing impairment teachers are appointed as:

    * an itinerant support teacher hearing, or
    * a support class teacher in a regular school with a specialist class for students who are Deaf or hearing impaired. These specialist classes provide support for young children from three years of age to Year 12.

    To join the Department of School Education and Training you will need to train to become a teacher. You can then apply to the Department to work in one of our public schools.
